A Day in the Life At Simon:

Revamping I-70

Under the guidance of Lonnie Niesent (Project Superintendent) and Albert Sisneros (Paving Foreman), an ambitious two-year project is underway at Simon along Interstate 70 in Burlington, CO. This initiative marks a significant investment in infrastructure, reinforcing the commitment to enhancing road safety and quality in Colorado and involves the application of 200,000 tons of asphalt over 9.5 miles of westbound lanes stretching from Burlington to Bethune.

In 2024 alone, the team successfully laid down 120,000 tons of asphalt, with an additional 80,000 tons earmarked for the project’s continuation in 2025. The process involved milling off 6.5 inches of existing asphalt, followed by a detailed layering system. On the Burlington to Bethune stretch, a 1-inch leveling mat was first installed, succeeded by a 2-inch bottom mat and a 2-inch top mat. For the section from the Kansas State Line to Burlington, the construction included a 1.5-inch bottom mat and a 1.5-inch top mat.

The project began on March 27, 2024 and is expected completion is October 2025.

Every day on this project is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our team. From the early morning preparations to the late-night finishes, each member plays a crucial role in transforming Interstate 70. It’s not just about laying down asphalt; it’s about enhancing road safety and quality for the community. The progress we’ve made so far, with 120,000 tons of asphalt laid in 2024, is a clear indication of our commitment. As we continue into 2025, with another 80,000 tons to go, I am confident that our efforts will leave a lasting impact on Colorado’s infrastructure. This project is more than just a job; it’s a mission to build a better future for everyone who travels these roads.
